Beaconsfield: excess in the Shires

The Crazy Bear in Beaconsfield is an island of gaudy excess in the heart of the comfortable, conservative Home Counties.

“Liberace lives,” is her reasonable conclusion.

“There’s velvet fabric, embossed leather or chequerboard tiles on other walls, fur on ceilings, white plastic studded with crystals for upholstery, dripping chandeliers, a creepy mirrored chill-out room, loos that are deliberately unmarked, impossible to find and astonishing once inside.”

“The English restaurant provides a welcome contrast to the ostentatious surroundings: sensible, freshly prepared and very well cooked.”

“There’s Persian pony skin on the walls of the bar, which feels like an opulent Napoleonic den.”

“The bedrooms are each built around a wildly ornate bed, with copper baths filled from the ceiling.”

Some Ink Art On Paper

Your choice of ink-drawing pen will depend upon your style of drawing and personal taste. Marker pens with lightfast ink are available in various diameter nibs, as well as brush-style tips. If you use a fountain pen or drafting pen, choose ink made for those pens, as they clog with Indian ink. Some artists even use the common Bic biro, though you need to scan these drawings for a permanent record, as the ink is not permanent.

World’s largest poker table

Built in 2007 for the promotion of a movie called Wise Guys On Texas Hold’Em, this giant poker table is 30 feet long and 12 feet wide making it the largest poker table ever built. You don’t know what happened to it after the whole movie promotion thing ended but you are pretty sure it’s still kept as an attraction or maybe just in case some players want to play at a…whole other level.
